Consequent upon the establishment of Assam (Central) University at Silchar after prolong struggle by the people of Barak Valley, there was strong enthusiasm among the graduates of this region for pursuing higher education at the university. Large number of young graduates from different corners of Barak Valley joined Assam University to pursue PG Courses. Many of them stayed at Meherpur, Silchar and surrounding areas. In the year 1996, at the initiative of Dr. Abul Hassan Chaudhury, presently Assistant Registrar, Assam University, a meeting of some PG students and a few staff members of Assam University hailing from three districts of Barak Valley and also a few students of Teachers’ Training College, Silchar held at A.K.Lane, Meherpur (Opposite to Vivekananda Cooperative Society), to discuss the educational scenario of Barak Valley particularly in the perspective of quality education among the people belonging to minority community. The meeting felt that there was urgent need to encourage and guide the young graduates and post graduates, so that they may excel in their respective discipline and establish themselves to contribute for national development. In that meeting it was proposed to make a platform for higher educated people of Barak Valley to exchange thoughts and views for taking some real steps for the promotion of quality education among the people of Barak Valley in general and minority community in particular.
Accordingly on 21st February 1997, in a meeting of such enthusiastic students and some staff members from Assam University held at Meherpur, a voluntary organization named ‘Barak Education Society` was formed and subsequently the activities of the society spread over the entire Barak Valley through conducting Merit Test among the school going students. Ultimately Unit (Anchalik) Committees were formed at different places, which paved the way for constituting District Committees at the three districts viz. Cachar, Karimganj & Hailakandi and finally regular Central Executive Committee was formed at a meeting held at Cachar College, Silchar to get the society as a full fledged voluntary organization at Barak Valley level.
